INDIANAPOLIS –
In the 64th running of a Marion County Boys Track & Field
Championship that featured the state’s four top-ranked teams May 9, No.
3 Ben Davis proved superior as the Giants rolled to 117 points to knock
off No. 1 Pike (96).

Fourth-ranked Lawrence North took third
with 95 points, while No. 2 defending state champion Warren Central
(83) was fourth and host #12 North Central (Indianapolis) and No. 14
Lawrence Central tied for fifth at 60.

On a day that was
bothered by rain throughout (the meet was postponed from Thursday due
to rain), Ben Davis came out firing by taking five events: the
100-meter dash, the 1600-meter run, the 4×100 meter relay, the
200-meter dash, and the 4×400 relay.

The five Ws helped propel the Giants to their first county title since 2000.

Ben Davis junior Matthew Terrell said the Giants felt as if they had something to prove coming into the meet.

“We talked about this before tonight,” said Terrell. “We wanted to come prove ourselves and show we are the best.”

Ben
Davis competed in its first meet without senior Raphael Williams, who
was seriously injured last week. Yet even without Williams, the Giants
looked as if they didn’t miss a beat.

Pike took home individual
honors in two events – the long jump, where senior Keron Harding jumped
23’-05.75”, and the 400 meters, where Josh Lee took ran a :49.69.

“We are going to continue working hard,” said Lee. “One night doesn’t make your season.”

Decatur
Central’s Bob Belden set the meet’s only record, throwing a 192’-07” in
the discus to take the title by a staggering 22 feet.

Warren
Central’s D’Juan Richardson came away with a clean sweep in the
hurdles, winning the 110 highs with a time of :14.42 and posting an
impressive come-from-behind victory in the 300 with a :38.69.

Next
week, the quest for the state title begins with sectionals throughout
Indiana. Heavyweights Pike and Ben Davis will compete in the Decatur
Central Sectional, while Warren Central and Lawrence North will go
their separate ways as they all attempt to make claim as the best boys
track team in Indiana.
