INDIANAPOLIS
– Host Perry Meridian won seven of 14 weight classes – including five in a row
at one point – as the second-ranked Falcons rolled to the team title Nov. 21 at
the Capital City Classic.

Coach
Jim Tonte’s troops totaled 249 points, well ahead of runner-up Jeffersonville
(176) and third-place Warren Central (170.5). No. 14 Columbus North finished
fourth with 151 points, while Beech Grove (146.5) was fifth and Franklin
Central (139.5) sixth in the eight-team field.

The
five Perry wrestlers who won every title from 135 pounds through 160 are ranked
in the state’s preseason individual rankings. They were No. 21 Chris Goodwin (a 15-1 major decision over 24th-ranked
Logan McWhorter of Columbus North at 135), No. 9 Jacob Tonte (a pin in 2:29
over
Franklin Central’s Kyle
Ettner at 140); No. 6 Jacob Tasseff (a 7-2 winner over
Columbus North’s Marcus Wadell at 145); No. 7 Blake Wood (a
9-5 decision over No. 24 Alex Bailey of Jeffersonville at 152); and No. 24 Cory
Hudgins (a 19-6 major decision over
FC’s Matt Knox).

Warren Central captured three crowns – sixth-ranked
Nick Odom (an 11-1 major decision over Beech Grove’s Nick Roberts at 130), plus
back-to-back winners at 189 (No. 4 Michael Johnson-Jones with a 12-3 major
decision over No. 7 Tyler Tatgenhorst of Jeffersonville) and 215 (Gabriel Berry
with a 3-1 upset in double overtime against fourth-ranked Chris Schaefer of
Perry Meridian).

Columbus North took two titles: No. 19 Francisco
Colon with a 6-1 decision over Bloomington North’s Shawn Miracle at 112 and
heavyweight Jowan Gill with a 52-second fall against Seymour’s Joe Rust.

The other two champions came from Jeffersonville (No.
11 Caleb Browner with a pin in 3:39 over No. 10 Gabe Watson of Columbus North
at 171), and Beech Grove (Seve Duncan’s 5-3 decision at 119 over Columbus North’s
Caleb Albertson).

Johnson-Jones, Warren’s 189-pounder, was named the
meet’s most outstanding wrestler after an opening-round forfeit, a 16-second
semifinal pin, and the decisive win over the highly ranked Tatgenhorst.
