It had to be hard to make supporters of Perry Meridian volleyball any more optimistic about the 2008 season than they already were. After all, the Falcons are coming off a 22-12 season a year ago and return four seniors and a very talented cast of underclassmen. Nonetheless, athletic director Mike Sipe found a way. Faced with the need to hire a new coach after the departure of previous mentor Missy Marsh, Sipe landed former Lawrence North headman Pat Carlson. All Carlson has done lately is take a once dormant LN program and lead them to a #2 state ranking for much of last season. So, as you might imagine, expectations are high on Indianapolis’ southside this year.

This Falcon crew will be experienced, talented, and big, big, BIG! All that height starts with 6’2” right side hitter Sarah Quebe. The gifted senior returns for a third year as a varsity contributor. She will be joined up front by middle hitters Lindsay Spears and Amanda Raker.  The former is a 6” junior and the latter a 6”2” sophomore. To make matters worse for opponents, all that size is combined with very talented outside hitters. 5’9” senior Shelby Gray and 5”10” junior McKenzie Chenowith will man the wings.

If you are wondering about a steadying influence to go with all that firepower, Perry Meridian has that as well. Senior libero Laura Strack will provide the floor leadership for the Falcons. Junior Stacey Sorgious will do much of the setting duties.

Carlson obviously cites size and blocking ability among the strengths the Falcons possess. However, the main strength of this team may be in the varied ways it can attack an opponent. At any time, the attack can come from at least five places on the court. The Falcons are also counting on their experience to help them through the tough Conference Indiana schedule. It is what happens before the attack that has Carlson concerned. He points to passing skills and spacing as the two areas where the Falcons need to improve.

No matter how talented you are, Conference Indiana is a tough road to travel. Perry Meridian will have to deal with the likes of defending champion Bloomington South, Columbus North, and an improving Pike squad. Carlson and his crew catch a bit of a break in the schedule in that at least two of those matches, Bloomington South and Pike, come in the final days of the season. The Falcons tussle with arch rival, and improving, Southport, will take place on home court September 2nd.

Carlson believes there are several Conference Indiana teams that could make noise come tourney time. The biggest challenge facing league teams is sectional alignments. The southern powers are grouped into one sectional, while Perry Meridian will have to deal with perennial power Center grove in the sectional.
