GT&F: CONFERENCE INDIANA SCHOOLS PERFORM WELL AT REGIONALS

Mike McGraw
Hoosier Authority

The Girls State Track Finals will feature more than a
sprinkling of Conference Indiana
athletes. Every CI school advanced at least one athlete to the finals. In many
instances, the contingents are large and the conference boasts one regional
team champion.

At Bedford, it was the battle
of the Bloomington
schools. South won the title and it was especially sweet as they did so by
edging city rival North by one point 96-95. You can chalk the Panthers’ victory
up to the strength of their relay teams. South advanced all three squads. The 4
X 400 was Regional Champions, while the 4 X 100 and the 4 X 800 teams both
finished second. North advanced only two relay squads, winning the 4 X 800 and
finishing 2nd in the 4 X 400.

Both Bloomington
schools also advanced several individuals. South will be sending five athletes
to state. Brooke Bierhaus won the 800 Meters, while fellow distance runner
Nicole Lucas ended second in the 3200 Meters. Bloomington South has two
sprinters advancing as well. Emma Miller finished third in the 100 Meter
Hurdles and Charlotte Zorn was second in the 200 Meters. The Panther contingent
is rounded out by Rachel Robertson who was third in the Long Jump.

Bloomington North advanced three athletes in five events.
Molly Hirt was a double qualifier for the Cougars with victories in both the
1600 and 3200 Meter Run. North boasted a double champion in the field events as
well. Rachel Deloney won both the Shot Put and the Discus. Erica New also
advanced for North by finishing third in the Pole Vault.

At Ben Davis, Perry Meridian finished third, Lawrence
Central sixth, Pike eighth, and Southport 17th
among the 29 team field. The Falcons will be sending three athletes to the
state round in four events. Emayrine Watt was a double qualifier with a second
in the 100 Meters and a fourth in the Long Jump. She advanced in the latter by
besting the standard. Also getting through for Perry Meridian were Ebony
Woodard who was second in the 400 Meters and Sasha Davis who did the same in
the Discus.

Here is the rundown of other CI athletes qualifying from Ben
Davis. Lawrence Central showed the appropriate direction for them is up and not
out. The Bears’ won both the High Jump and the Pole Vault. Camille Hayes did
the job in the High Jump while teammate Margo Tucker won the Pole Vault. Pike’s
Erica Campbell placed third in the 200 Meters and the Red Devils also qualified
their 4 X 100 Relay Team by beating the standard time. Southport
will send Sayman Kollison to state after she placed third in the 100 Meter
Hurdles.

The remaining two CI squads were at the Shelbyville
Regional. Columbus North backed up their Sectional title with a third place
finish n the team standings while Franklin Central ended 17th. The
Bull Dogs strength was in the relays. They advanced both their 4 X 800 team
with a second place performance, and the 4 X 400 team with a third. North will
also send pole vaulter Grace Smith to the finals after a third place finish.
Franklin Central’s lone qualifier was Christine Talhelm who placed second in
the 800 Meters.

BT&F Marion Co. Meet: #3 Ben Davis bursts #1 Pike’s bubble, 117 to 96

By Aaron Pittman
HoosierAuthority.com

INDIANAPOLIS –
In the 64th running of a Marion County Boys Track & Field
Championship that featured the state’s four top-ranked teams May 9, No.
3 Ben Davis proved superior as the Giants rolled to 117 points to knock
off No. 1 Pike (96).

Fourth-ranked Lawrence North took third
with 95 points, while No. 2 defending state champion Warren Central
(83) was fourth and host #12 North Central (Indianapolis) and No. 14
Lawrence Central tied for fifth at 60.

On a day that was
bothered by rain throughout (the meet was postponed from Thursday due
to rain), Ben Davis came out firing by taking five events: the
100-meter dash, the 1600-meter run, the 4×100 meter relay, the
200-meter dash, and the 4×400 relay.

The five Ws helped propel the Giants to their first county title since 2000.

Ben Davis junior Matthew Terrell said the Giants felt as if they had something to prove coming into the meet.

“We talked about this before tonight,” said Terrell. “We wanted to come prove ourselves and show we are the best.”

Ben
Davis competed in its first meet without senior Raphael Williams, who
was seriously injured last week. Yet even without Williams, the Giants
looked as if they didn’t miss a beat.

Pike took home individual
honors in two events – the long jump, where senior Keron Harding jumped
23’-05.75”, and the 400 meters, where Josh Lee took ran a :49.69.

“We are going to continue working hard,” said Lee. “One night doesn’t make your season.”

Decatur
Central’s Bob Belden set the meet’s only record, throwing a 192’-07” in
the discus to take the title by a staggering 22 feet.

Warren
Central’s D’Juan Richardson came away with a clean sweep in the
hurdles, winning the 110 highs with a time of :14.42 and posting an
impressive come-from-behind victory in the 300 with a :38.69.

Next
week, the quest for the state title begins with sectionals throughout
Indiana. Heavyweights Pike and Ben Davis will compete in the Decatur
Central Sectional, while Warren Central and Lawrence North will go
their separate ways as they all attempt to make claim as the best boys
track team in Indiana.

BT&F Conference Indiana: #4 Pike wins seven events, conference crown

By Colin Altevogt
Track & Field Coordinator

Predictably
enough, No. 4 Pike won seven of 16 events April 25 at Indiana
University to easily defend its Conference Indiana boys track title
against a field that included six teams ranked in the state’s Top 25.

The
Red Devils totaled 147 points to outduel runner-up No. 10 Bloomington
South (124), with No. 20 Lawrence Central third. The field, in fact,
was so talented that No. 15 Bloomington North could manage only a
sixth-place finish with 50 points.

Pike’s Keron Harding was one
of the meet’s two individual winners, jumping 22’2.5” in the long jump
and running :22.09 in the 200-meter dash to best teammate Darnel Harris
in the latter. Harding was also on the winning 4×100 meter relay.

The
Red Devils also won the 4×400 in 3:21.88 in the event where they hold
the state’s best time, and 400 meter ace Josh Lee broke the meet record
in that event as well with his :48.34 performance. (That time is also
the state’s best so far.) Other Pike winners were Darnell Harris in the
100 and Larrijames Smith in the 300 meter hurdles.

Bloomington
South’s Joe Holahan was the meet’s other double winner, posting times
of 1:57.30 and 4:26.19 to win the 800 and 1600 runs. Bloomington
North’s Michael Hoffman ran away from Ben Bizuneh of Pike to win the
3200 in 9:20.57, the fifth-best number in Indiana this season.

Lawrence
Central’s Geoff Davis joined Lee as the other meet record-breaker.
Davis cleared 6’8.5” in the high jump, the fourth-best effort this
season.

GT&F RANKINGS: Four CI teams among state’s Top 21

It’s time for the fifth round of rankings for the 2008 girls track
& field season from our Davyd Cash, and it appears we’re largely
looking at the set o’ teams that’s gonna take us into the postseason.
That’s because there are but two slight changes in the Top 10 –
Westfield going from third to fourth, and Carroll (Fort Wayne) moving
from 11th to 10th.

Otherwise,
everybody stays the same up top just eight days before girls sectionals
take place. That would be North Central (Indianapolis) and Warren
Central at 1-2, with Lawrence North and Penn rounding out the first 5
ahead of Carmel, Merrillville, West Lafayette, and Munster.

Meanwhile, four Conference Indiana teams dot the landscape among the state’s Top 21. They are Columbus North (11th), Bloomington South (14th), Perry Meridian (16th), and Bloomington North (21st).

Mr. Cash’s next-to-last Top 31 for the girls outdoor season from May 5 (CI teams appear in italics):

1. North Central (Indianapolis)
2. Warren Central
3. Westfield
4. Lawrence North
5. Penn
6. Carmel
7. Merrillville
8. West Lafayette
9. Munster
10. Carroll (Fort Wayne)

GT&F Conference Indiana: Columbus North posts shocking victory

By Colin Altevogt
Track & Field Coordinator

Unranked
Columbus North shocked everybody April 25, defeating five ranked
schools in taking the school’s first-ever Conference Indiana girls
track & field title at Indiana University in Bloomington.

The
Bull Dogs scored big points in the distance events and hurdles,
including a win in the 100-meter hurdles and a runner-up finish in the
300s by freshman Courtney Larson. While victorious only in two events,
Columbus North took advantage of its superior depth by placing two
individuals in eight different events and finishing no worse than
fourth in any of the relays.

The Bull Dogs scored 120.5 points
to outdistance No. 18 Bloomington South (107.75). No. 32 Perry Meridian
took third, while the conference’s top-ranked team, No. 11 Pike,
managed but a sixth-place finish.

The runner-up Panthers had
gotten out to an early lead in the 4×800 after freshman Brooke Bierhaus
anchored home the winning relay, just outleaning Columbus North’s
Georgia Tech-bound senior distance ace Betsy Kim.

Rachel
Deloney, winner in the shot put and discus, and Molly Hirt, victorious
in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, were the only double individual event
winners. Both girls represented No. 13 Bloomington North, which
finished fourth at 92.75.

Pike senior Erica Campbell won the 200
and also contributed a leg on the Red Devils’ victorious 4×100 meter
relay team. Perry Meridian junior Ebony Woodard led a 1-2 Falcon finish
in the 400 and ran on Perry’s winning 4×400 meter relay team that just
edged out Franklin Central and Columbus North.

Other individual
winners were: Perry Meridian’s Emarynne Watt (100), Franklin Central’s
Christine Talhelm (800), Columbus North’s Mollie Stafford (300
hurdles), Bloomington South’s Ellie Sparks (high jump) and Rachel
Robertson (long jump,) and Lawrence Central’s Margo Tucker (pole vault).

GT&F: Southport takes second behind Perry Meridian, ahead of FC

By Chris Drullinger
Southport News Bureau

The Southport girls track & field team took on Perry Meridian and Franklin Central in an April 8 triangular meet featuring Conference Indiana foes. The Cardinals scored 50 points and placed second, with Perry Meridian (81) winning and Franklin Central (36) taking third.
“I thought it was a very good effort following Spring Break, and I left thinking and believing we endeavored to fight and do our best,”
said Southport coach Nathan Fishel. “We just came up short.”

First-place finishers for Southport were the 4×100 meter relay team of Saymah Kollison, Andrica Higginson, Erika Satterthwaite, and Natalie Lay, as well as Saymah Kollison (100-meter hurdles), Allison Zorman (800-meter run), and Natalie Lay (300 hurdles).
