FB: Conference Indiana Teams Have Another Strong Week

Staff Report

All in all, it was another successful Friday night for
Conference Indiana
football teams. The conference went 5-3 in week two, running its non-conference
record to 11-5 on the season. CI teams split with MIC opponents in two games
this week, sending the record to 3-1 after two weeks. Here is a rundown of the
action.

Bloomington North 21 Bedford N. Lawrence 16— The Cougars
aren’t steamrolling opponents, but they are 2-0

Bloomington South 28 Martinsville 6— The Panthers got an
impressive performance from a much maligned defense.

Columbus East 35 Columbus North 3— The Bull Dogs lost
bragging rights in the city for a year and obviously have some regrouping to
do.

Roncalli 30 Franklin Central 7—There is never any shame in
losing to the rebels. This was new coach Brian hairpin’s first loss at the helm
of the Flashes.

Lawrence Central 28 north central 16— The Bears continue
to give notice they will be the most improved team in the conference.

Center Grove 55 Perry Meridian 14— The Falcons can at
least look forward to the schedule becoming a little more reasonable in coming
weeks. Ben Davis and Center grove back to back is hard on anybody.

Pike 39 Decatur
Central 7—The Red Devils have picked up right where they left off last
season.

Southport 43 Anderson
9—This represents the biggest win in Bill Peebles time at the helm of the
Cardinals.

VB: Perry Meridian Continues Fast Start With Sweep Of LC

Mike McGraw

Hoosier Authority

This is not the most pleasant of times for the Lawrence Central
athletic department. Construction delays have played havoc with the
availability of athletic facilities at the school. The football team had to
play rival Lawrence North at Franklin Central last Friday, a game they won
17-0. The volleyball team is also playing off campus at a nearby independent
facility and Tuesday evening their results were not so positive. Visiting Perry
Meridian swept the Bears in three games, 25-14, 25-11, and 25-16.

For the Falcons it was an extension of what has been a quick
start under new coach Pat Carlson. Perry Meridian moved to 3-0 on the season and
1-0 in Conference Indiana
play Coach Pat Carlson felt it was another step forward in the Falcons
development. They easily controlled the first two games but struggled a bit in
the third against a spirited Bears effort. Carlson was actually pleased with
the way his team handled things not going well during that stretch. They kept
their composure and eventually pulled away.

The star for Perry Meridian on this night was junior Shelby
Gray. She had 12 kills and 15 digs in the three games. Hoosier Authority spoke
to both Gray and Coach Carlson after the match. Player and coach were in agreement
that the transition to a new coach and system is going well. Click on the video

GXC: #2 Carmel coasts to opening victory at Brebeuf Inv.

By Dave Fresher
Contributing Writer

INDIANAPOLIS – Brebeuf hosted the first high-profile meet of the 2008 girls high school cross country season Aug. 23 featuring more than a dozen top Central Indiana schools at the Brebeuf Invitational.

The girls race was not nearly as close as the boys, which went to unranked North Central (Indianapolis) in an upset over No. 11 Franklin Central and third-ranked Fishers. Ninth-ranked Indianapolis Chatard won the girls individual battle, but No. 2 Carmel won the team war.

Carly Sobolewski finished first for the Trojans in 18:35, but she was followed by the Carmel foursome of Renee Wellman, Alex Chitwood, Kayla McCurdy, and Kelly McCurd to round out the first five. Carmel’s Sarah Bennett finished seventh to put five Greyhounds in the Top 10.

Carmel easily won the meet with 21 points. Unranked North Central and Chatard made it interesting, but the Panthers nipped the Trojans for second place, 113 to 115. No. 10 Indianapolis Cathedral (130) finished fourth in the 13-team field, with Hamilton Southeastern (143) fifth, Fishers (178) sixth, and No. 18 Lawrence North (197) taking seventh.

BXC: Unranked North Central surprises field at Brebeuf Inv.

By Dave Fresher
Contributing Writer

INDIANAPOLIS – Brebeuf hosted the first high-profile meet of the 2008 boys high school cross country season Aug. 23 featuring top Central Indiana schools at the Brebeuf Invitational.

In the opening race, defending state champion Drew Shields of Fishers took the blue ribbon with a time of 15:51. The senior was followed by Futsum Zeinasellassie (15:55) of North Central (Indianapolis), Dylan Sorensen (16:00) of Zionsville, and North Central’s Bahlebi Zeinasellassie (16:12). Franklin Central’s Scott Lasiter (16:30) rounded out the first five.

With three-quarters of the race complete, both Shields and Zeinasellassies had distanced themselves from the rest of the field. But when the runners entered the home stretch, it was Shields who pulled away for the win. Sorensen managed to pull inside of the Zeinasellassie brothers for third.

Unranked North Central won the 11-team meet with a score of 66 as all seven runners finished in the Top 50, including four in the Top 20. The Panthers nipped No. 11 Franklin Central and third-ranked Fishers, which finished with 72 and 74 points for second and third, respectively.

No. 21 Lawrence North (116) eked out a one-point margin over Zionsville (117) for fourth place, with No. 17 Warren Central (135) finishing sixth.

FB: Preview – Perry Meridan Will Depend On Quickness And Flexibility

Mike McGraw
Hoosier Authority

Flexibility is the word being tossed around at Perry Meridian football practice these days. Coach Doug Bradburn enters his fifth year at the helm with 18 seniors on the roster. One name not returning is standout quarterback Adam Wiese and therein lays the need for all that flexibility.

The Falcons went 3-7 last season with Wiese behind center. Offensively however, they were a force to be reckoned with each and every week. PM’s passing attack was one of the best in the state. Without Wiese’s rocket arm, Bradburn knows there will be some adapting necessary to continue that offensive output. Much of that will fall on the shoulders of senior Danny Richards who will take many of the snaps for the Falcons this time around. Don’t be surprised if you also see Richards at wide receiver from time to time. That is part of that flexibility we were talking about. Senior Zack Roark will also be quarterbacking and that duo will hopefully make the Falcons hard prepare for this fall.

Here are a couple of other names in the Perry meridian backfield to keep an eye on. Senior Curtis Worth is a 5’11” 185lb. speed running back and Brent Clemens will be a unique weapon at the slot back position. Clemens is 6’2” and 225lbs. That could make him a difficult match-up in a lot of formations.

Bradburn is counting on the leadership of two talented seniors on the defensive side of the ball. 5’10” 170lb. Chris Bova returns at cornerback to anchor the pass defense, while Cory Hudgins returns to the linebacking corp. Tyler Barnes and Jimmy Williams will also contribute in that area. It is a linebacking unit that is small but very mobile.

Coach Bradburn believes the back seven of his defense is a strong point of this team. They are experienced and quick. That quickness will be a hallmark of this Falcon squad. The big challenge for the Falcons is adjusting the way they play in the absence of Wiese. Overall, Bradburn is also worried about a lack of experience at many positions.

As usual, one of the biggest obstacles for Perry Meridian is a schedule that is among the state’s toughest. They open with Ben Davis followed by Center Grove. It has to get easier you say? Think again. The Falcons close the campaign with consecutive games against Columbus North, Pike, and Bloomington South.
