FB: Three Conference Indiana teams switch sectional in realignment

Staff Report

Conference
Indiana is not going to be affected by realignment as much as some of the other
premiere leagues in the state. Nonetheless, there are at least three schools in
the conference whose road through the sectional is getting tougher. Southport,
Franklin Central, and Perry Meridian have been switched into Sectional 5. That
puts them in the same field as MIC power Warren Central and CI foe Lawrence
Central. That is the only significant change for the league.

BB: CI teams go 3-1 in opening round sectional action

Close calls
and mixed results are the bywords for Conference Indiana in first round
sectional action. Four conference teams entered the fray on the first two
nights and the largest margin of victory or loss was just three points. In all,
the league went 3-1 in opening round competition.

Tuesday
night Bloomington North slipped past Columbus East 41-38 in the Columbus
Sectional. That sets up a date with East Central on Friday night. Perry Meridian
pulled off the biggest upset so far. The Falcons downed host Center Grove
Tuesday evening 49-48. That earned them a date against heavy favorite Franklin
Central in round two.

Things were
not so fortunate for Southport at the Center Grove site. The Cardinals fell to
Whiteland on Wednesday 43-40. At Pike the hosts hot a last second shot to
dethrone defending state champion Brownsburg 50-48. That moves the Red Devils
into a semi-final match up with Decatur Central on Friday.

The
remaining four Conference Indiana teams do not open play until Friday night.

W: Perry Meridian falls just short of a state title

It was definitely a changing of the guard. Evansville Mater Dei was not present, and Mishawaka fell in the opening round. Just about the only thing constant about the Team Wrestling State Finals was that Perry Meridian was right in the thick of the title chase. In the end, the Falcons fell short, losing to Crown Point in the championship match, 33-25.

The day got off to an exciting start.  Indianapolis Cathedral downed #1 Mishawaka in first round action 31-30. Meanwhile, the Falcons slipped past #6 Bellmont 31-27. Crown Point and Castle enjoyed lopsided wins over Roncalli and Delphi respectively. Perry Meridian built a sizeable advantage in the lower weight classes and then held off a furious rally in the upper classes.

If the opening match had been testing, it was nothing compared to the battle Perry Meridian faced in the semi-finals. Castle led the Falcons going into the final contest of the match. Freshman Jarad McKinley came to the rescue scoring a tech fall victory at 103 lbs. It was just enough to allow the Falcons to eek out a 24-23 victory. The drama served to set up a final between Perry Meridian and Crown Point. The Bulldogs had eliminated Cathedral in the second round by a 28-23 count.

The title match could not have been closer. Neither team won more than three weight classes in a row. Each team won seven of the fourteen individual matches. The difference in the contest came in the heavier classes where Crown Point scored victories by pin in three different weight classes.

Here is a look at the complete match results for the Falcons.
