BSOC: Conference Indiana Teams Greeted With Favorable Draws

Conference Indiana
teams face a variety of challenges in their first round sectional match ups of
the state soccer tournament. Generally however, the conference got favorable
draws to begin postseason play.

That is apparent no place more than at Ben Davis where the
resurgent Southport program drew a first round
game against Decatur Central and Perry Meridian received the bye. Obviously in
both instances, they avoided the host Giants until the final match of the
tournament. Also in Indianapolis,
Lawrence Central drew an opening assignment versus Heritage Christian. Township
rival Lawrence North awaits in the other bracket. Pike, one of the strongest
teams in the conference, opens tourney play against Cardinal Ritter. Franklin
Central will face Beech Grove in their opener at the Roncalli sectional.

Down south, the Bloomington
schools avoided each other in the first round. South will face host Edgewood
while North will tangle with Owen
Valley
. The form chart
says that should set up an all Bloomington
final. Columbus North, another of the league’s top teams, will open against
Trinity Lutheran at Seymour.
City rival East would await in a second round contest.

FB: Southport, Lawrence Central ascend to top of Conference Indiana

Mike McGraw

Hoosier Authority

Last year they had records of 1-9 and 307. One has been the
doormat of Conference Indiana
football nearly since the league’s inception. The other has had little or no
success since 2004. Yet, after Friday night’s action, Southport
and Lawrence Central stand at the top of the Conference Indiana standings.

Southport eliminated any
lingering doubts as to whether they were for real by drubbing pre-season
favorite Bloomington South 48-21. The cardinals are not only 3-0 in league play;
they boast victories over both of the teams people cited as the league’s best.
The storyline is simple. The Cardinals are using a whole lot of fundamental
football and a whole lot of Nick turner. The senior running back went for 287
yards Friday and is now just 300 yards from the all-time Southport
rushing record.

Lawrence Central remained undefeated under new coach Jayson
West with a 34-17 win over Columbus North. The impressive thing about this victory
is that the score was actually 34-2 over the last three and half quarters. The
Bull Dogs had jumped to an early 14-0 lead. The Bears are using solid defense
and a multi-headed offensive machine to get the job done.

Pike returned to the winning side of the ledger with a 41-21
victory over Bloomington North. The Red Devils returned to the offensive form
that had them so highly regarded in the first two weeks of the season.
Bloomington North continues to score a lot of points but the Cougars are having
trouble keeping opponents out of the end zone.

Franklin Central got their first league win with a 21-14
verdict over winless Perry Meridian. The Flashes have a chance to put the
brakes on the runaway Southport train next
week at home. The big game next week will be in Bloomington. Lawrence Central will visit
South which now has to win to stay in the conference race

FB: 5A Southport blanks township rival 5A Perry Meridian, 35-0

By Jeff Hodge
Contributing Writer

INDIANAPOLIS – What a night to play some football Sept. 12 at Perry Stadium. Soggy, sloppy, and far-less-than-ideal field conditions could spell trouble for the offenses of Conference Indiana and township rivals Perry Meridian and Southport, with the latter relying on a solid ground game and the former using the spread offense.

Who would be standing tall after this struggle for a new traveling trophy, “The Rock”? That’s right, a ROCK! And one that was hermetically sealed in a plastic cube that obscured it from sight because of all the humidity.

Could Southport sustain its strong start after shocking Pike last week, or would the upset-minded Falcons prevail? The 35-0 final proved that Southport’s resurgence may be for real.

Southport (3-1 overall, 2-0 Conference Indiana) was able to move the ball at will against a much smaller team on this night. The running back duo of Nick Turner (13 carries, 108 yards) and Julian Walker (2-12), combined with fullback Tyler Plummer (eight carries, 52 yards), wore down the Falcons’ defense in the first half for a 14-0 lead.

The Cardinal defense, meanwhile, was just as stout in the opening half, intercepting Perry quarterback Zach Ruark three times.

After halftime, Southport took only five plays to go 64 yards. A 33-yard run by Turner put the Cardinals up 21-0.

Perry’s next drive stalled at the Southport 35, so fifth-year coach Doug Bradburn tried to keep his team in the game by going for it on 4th and 3. But the Falcons (0-4, 0-2) came up a yard short, and Southport took nine plays to cover the ensuing 65 yards. A five-yard sweep by Walker made it 28-0.

The final score came with 56 seconds remaining and Southport trying to run out the clock. On a toss play, backup RB Denzel Hinton – all 5’6″ of him – broke several tackles in cutting back to the left. And going 51 yards to the hizzie.

Round 1 of the battle for The Rock goes to Southport, whose fourth-year coach Bill Peebles is very satisfied with his team’s fast start to the season after having anticipated a 2-2 start based on the schedule.

“It only gets tougher from here,” Peebles said. “Every team in Conference Indiana is very good and, realizing we are not going to be the strongest or fastest team each week, the kids just keep fighting.”

While the scoreboard does not reflect how well Perry Meridian played tonight, the box score will. Perry was able to move the ball on Southport but struggled with its spread offense in the wet, nasty conditions.

Bradburn said it was a very tough loss for the kids, made even tougher by the close proximity of the two schools.

“These kids all grew up together and know one another, making it a tough loss,” Bradburn said.

Next up for Southport is a Sept. 19 home game against 5A No. 9 Bloomington South (4-0, 2-0), an insane 69-41 Week 4 winner over Bloomington North. Perry Meridian, on the other hand, will travel to Franklin Central (1-3, 0-2), a 31-7 loser at Columbus North.

Haji’s take: While the Perry Meridian kids were undersized and outplayed by the bigger Southport team, they may have a much bigger foe to battle: a lack of fan support. Even though there was a good crowd for Perry, they seemed to have their minds elsewhere, even making derogatory chants toward their own team.

It says here that the Falcon fans need to get behind these guys and help them pull out their season.

FB: Conference Indiana race producing big surprises

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

If you had asked before the season, few people would have predicted that the early stages of the Conference Indiana football schedule would produce two distinct divisions. Nonetheless, after two weeks of league play, that is exactly what we have.

Four teams stand 2-0, and four squads are looking up from 0-2 starts. Even more surprising are the members of the two groups.

Preseason favorite Bloomington South sits at 2-0 and is joined by perennial power Columbus North. There is no surprise in that. However, a couple of teams with far less history have crashed the party as Southport and Lawrence Central also stand unbeaten after two conference contests.

Meanwhile, last year’s 5A state runner-up Pike and traditionally strong Franklin Central are still looking for their first league win.

Here is a summary of the Sept. 12 Week 4 games in the conference:

Lawrence Central continued to be the biggest surprise in the state, downing 5A No. 8 Pike 28-21 in a great game. The 5A ninth-ranked Bears used a superlative special teams effort to pull off the road victory. The win not only took LC to 2-0 in Conference Indiana play, it also left the Bears unbeaten on the season at 4-0.

Southport won the battle of Indianapolis’ southside over Perry Meridian, 35-0. Everybody predicted the Cardinals would be strong defensively, but their offense is opening eyes all over the state. In the last three games, Southport has registered 49, 28, and 35 points. A big reason for the sudden offensive outburst is running back Nate Davis, who was over 200 yards again Friday night.

Bloomington South won the city rivalry game in Bloomington 69-51 over North. No, that is not a misprint. The 5A No. 9 Panthers have been nearly unstoppable on offense this season, and North has had trouble stopping the opposition. It is clear by this score that neither squad has solved their defensive woes.

Columbus North has also had some problems on defense, but if Friday (a 31-7 manhandling of Franklin Central) is any indication, the Bull Dogs have found some answers. North has come a long way since the shellacking it took from city rival East two weeks ago. Franklin Central, meanwhile, continues to have problems putting the ball into the end zone.

You can see video highlights of action from the Lawrence Central-Pike and Southport-Perry Meridian games on video players throughout the Conference Indiana site.

FB: League Play Begins With Stunner

Mike McGraw

Hoosier Authority

People in the know said all summer that the two most
improved teams in Conference Indiana would be Southport and Lawrence Central. It did not take long for
those people to be proven right. League play opened Friday night and Southport pulled off one of the biggest shockers in
recent years with a 28-21 upset of Pike. This one was no fluke either. The
Cardinals were ahead at the end of three quarters by 20 points and held on for
the win. Running back Nick Davis gained over 200 yards on the ground for the cardinals.

Lawrence Central continued to impress onlookers. The Bears
downed Perry Meridian 49-0. The win makes LC 3-0 under new coach Jayson West.
It also will further the love they started to receive from the statewide
pollsters this week.

Bloomington South did nothing to take the “favorite” label
from their helmets. The Panthers downed Franklin Central 34-7. The most
impressive part of this win was the defensive effort. South is beginning to
answer those critics who questioned whether their defense could improve enough
to make them a threat for the title.

Columbus North bounced back from their loss last week to
city rival East. The Bull Dogs knocked off Bloomington North, but it certainly
wasn’t easy. Columbus
prevailed 35-28. How hard to you think it must be for either team to prepare
for this game? After all, the two coaches grew up in the same household. They
have to know each other pretty well.
