Sw Marion Co.: North Central sweeps to victory

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

INDIANAPOLIS – The Marion County Swimming and Diving Meet has a long history of dynasties. In the early years, it was Ben Davis that dominated the competition. Then, Lawrence North spent time as the big gun in the county.

For more than a decade, North Central (Indianapolis) has been the overwhelming force. That proved true again Dec. 20 as the highly ranked Panthers ran away with both the boys and girls titles.

#1 NC boys win seven events, down runner-up #32 Franklin Central by nearly 150
North Central’s top-ranked boys racked up 484 points on their way to topping their closest pursuer by nearly 150 points. No. 32 Franklin Central (339) gave a strong showing for the day to finish second, while Lawrence North (215) was third and No. 18 Brebeuf (201) finished fourth.

North Central’s boys won seven events on the day – including double wins from Ben Souders (2:00.32 in the 200-yard individual medley, 1:02.88 in the 100 breaststroke) and Brandon Siemasko (4:41.95 in the 500 freestyle, :52.78 in the 100 backstroke) – but overwhelmed the competition with their depth.

Another notable performance came from Franklin Central’s Brad Scott. He won both the 100 free (:47.47) and 200 free (1:43.12) and anchored the Flashes’ 200 free relay team (1:30.61) to victory. Andrew Stevenson’s :21.89 in the 50 free gave Franklin Central a sweep in the freestyle sprints.

Another stellar performance came in 1-meter diving, where Southport swept the first two places, including James Sweeney’s winning effort of 433.20 points. We would be remiss if we didn’t mention that Hoosier Authority contributor Kyle Kibby was second in that competition (congrats, Kyle!)

Team scores (boys)

#5 NC girls win seven events, post team victory of 200+ points
As dominant as North Central’s boys were, it paled in comparison to the performance of the fifth-ranked Panther girls. They amassed 511 points and seven victories in rolling past runner-up No. 19 Lawrence North (301), with No. 36 Brebeuf (262) placing third and Franklin Central (191) finishing fourth.

Lauren Massey led the North Central charge. Massey, who is quickly becoming one of the best freestylers in the state, won both the 50 free (:24.06) and 100 free (:52.87) as well as anchoring two winning North Central relay teams. Not to be outdone, the Panthers’ Amy Katz won both the 200 IM (2:08.63) and the 100 back (58.82).

North Central’s dominance notwithstanding, there were a number of outstanding performances from other schools. Lawrence North won the 200 medley relay with a time (1:51.30) that was less than a second off the meet record, and Decatur Central’s Kaila Dunnuck prevented a North Central sweep of the freestyle events when she swam a 1:56.34 in taking the 200.

BB: Hot 2H lifts 4A #5 Franklin Central to 74-42 win over Perry Meridian

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

INDIANAPOLIS – With 30 seconds left in the first half of its Conference Indiana clash Dec. 19 with Class 4A No. 5 Franklin Central, visiting Perry Meridian had a chance to cut what had been an 11-point deficit down to just two.

But despite coach Bill Zych’s cries for one shot, freshman guard Michael Ramey pulled up and launched an errant jumper with 22 ticks left on the clock.

It was the beginning of the end for the Falcons.

The host Flashes worked the clock down before sophomore guard Kyle James nailed a 3-pointer just ahead of the buzzer. That trey, in turn, sparked a 38-11 run over the next 12 minutes as Franklin Central (5-0 overall, 2-0 in Conference Indiana) rolled to a 74-42 victory.

“It was one of those games where the score is misleading,” said a gracious Franklin Central coach Mark James. “We were fortunate to hit some shots.

“We turned the ball over too much in the first half, but they just couldn’t hit a shot (in the second).”

Bingo.

Perry Meridian (1-4, 0-2) was able to hang through the first half by limiting 6’8” senior Patrick Bade to zero baskets and only five points while knocking down 9 of 10 free throws. But the wheels fell off in the second half as the Purdue-bound Bade scored 15 points while the Falcons were suffering through 17-percent shooting.

Contrasting Franklin Central’s 61-percent shooting over the final two periods – the Flashes were 19 of 31 in the second half, including baskets on nine of their first 11 possessions of the third quarter – with Perry’s woeful 1-of-15 effort (7 percent) from behind the 3-point line, and you have the recipe for a blowout.

“They did a better job of creating opportunities for him to score,” Perry Meridian coach Bill Zych said of the Flashes and their go-to guy, Bade.

That included a we’re-gonna-go-inside layup from Bade on FC’s first possession of the second half, the one that started an easy-bucket blitzkrieg featuring four layins, a 3-pointer from senior point guard Casey Coons (17 points), and a trio of baskets in the paint.

“In the first half, I was pretty happy with how we played,” Zych said. “But we had too many turnovers and bad shots in the second half.”

Kyle James, son of the 24th-year FC coach, added to that timely trifecta with game highs of eight rebounds, seven assists, and four steals.

“Both their guards fit their need exactly,” said Zych, who said tonight was “like starting over” after just getting junior swingman Amir Blackshear and senior forward Braden Schuster back from four games apiece with injury. “Both shoot well and understand the game.”

The Falcons, who will host another undefeated team Dec. 20 in 4-0 Decatur Central, were led in scoring by the 10 points each of senior swingman Ian Jackson and junior forward Paul Person.

So how is coach James feeling about the Conference Indiana race the week before Christmas?

“Too early!” James barked. “That’s the least of our worries.”

Indeed. Americans all over the country may be looking forward to kicking back a bit over the holiday season, but the Flashes will be busy.

Extremely busy.

4A No. 17 Warren Central (3-1) comes calling Dec. 20, then the Flashes will tackle 1A No. 6 Lafayette Central Catholic – a 10-point winner over 4A second-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral this very night – a week later in the four-team Zionsville Tournament.

Follow that up Dec. 30 with the prestigious Hall of Fame Tournament at New Castle (the Flashes open with 4A No. 8 Lafayette Jefferson and will battle either 2A No. 4 Bluffton or 2A top-ranked Tipton at night), and you could maybe call that a brutal stretch.

W Perry Meridian Duals: #3 host Falcons roll past #12 New Pal, #13 Avon

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

With top-ranked Mishawaka ruling the roost up north at the Traicoff Invitational and No. 2 Evansville Mater Dei continuing its Southern Indiana dominance Dec. 13 at the Castle Duals, it was up to third-ranked Perry Meridian to maintain the status quo in Central Indiana.

The host Falcons did not fail to deliver, rolling past ranked foes No. 13 Avon and No. 12 New Palestine at the Perry Meridian Duals. Perry Meridian captured 10 of 14 weight classes in overcoming the Orioles 40-12, and the Falcons won an even dozen duals in neutralizing New Pal, 45-9.

Perry Meridian’s No. 6 Jacob Tassef was involved in a pair of high-profile battles against other ranked opponents at 145 pounds, and in each instance he came out one point ahead. The senior downed Avon’s eighth-ranked senior Corbin Richards, 5-4, and also defeated New Pal’s No. 19 senior David Waldroup, 3-2.

New Palestine then faced off against Avon, winning 10 classes en route to a surprisingly easy 46-13 victory. Leading only 12-11 after the first five matches, the Dragons reeled off five straight wins and came out on top in eight of the last nine to clinch the win.

The highlight came, once again, at 145 when Waldroup upset Richards with a pin.

BB: Conference Indiana Basketball Summary

Mike McGraw

Hoosier Authority

The
basketball season kicked into high gear over the weekend and Conference Indiana
teams were right in the middle of the action. As expected, the league’s two top
rated teams both picked up victories. Bloomington South was in action Friday
night. The Panthers demolished Bedford 73-45. On Saturday night, Franklin
Central took to the hardwood and came away with a 76=63 triumph over Columbus
east.

Elsewhere,
it was a mixed bag for most of the CI squads. Bloomington North may have had
the most exciting weekend. The Cougars fell to Monroe County rival Edgewood
Friday 58-54. They bounced back Saturday night with an electrifying double
overtime verdict over Center Grove 59-58. Julian Boatner hit the game winning
shot at the end of the second extra session. He led the Cougars with 19 points.

Pike picked
up their first win under new coach Pete Spoljaric Friday when they downed Ben
Davis 89-83, but the Red Devils fell to Avon Saturday 73-71. Marquis Teague led
Pike with 26 markers. Columbus North also split a pair of contests. The Bull
Dogs fell to a tough Shelbyville squad Friday 55-53. They rebounded Saturday
night with an 85-76 verdict over Martinsville.

Southport
fell into the one up and one down pattern. The Cardinals fell to Center Grove
Friday evening 69-55, but thrashed Greenfield-Central the next evening 62-39.
Southport placed three players in double figures in the victory. Lawrence
Central knocked of Indianapolis Tech 63-60 Friday night and then became the
latest victim of North Central Saturday, 80-55. Perry Meridian picked up their
first victory Saturday as they frolicked past Indianapolis Manual 72-31.

Conference
play begins this coming Friday night. The headliner will be Franklin Central’s
visit to Columbus North. Elsewhere, Southport will travel to Bloomington South,
Lawrence Central will entertain Pike, and Perry Meridian will be at Bloomington
North.
